What are the benefits of sport sampling or playing multiple sports as a child?

  • Kids find out what they like: if kids are provided with opportunities to have fun and play multiple sports it gives them the ability to gravitate towards the sports they like the best, while not going all in on just one. If a kid loses interest in a sport at 13, the transition to another sport is more likely if the child has already played multiple sports in their childhood.

  • More competent movers: while early sport specialization can help with skill development, it can also be detrimental in developing overall athleticism. Kids have a window before they mature to maximize fluency in as many foundational movement patterns as possible. Once the window is closed it is much harder to make up for the lack of physical literacy. Multi-sport participation at a young age is a great way to create capable and confident movers, all while learning to work within a team setting.

  • Reduced stress & burnout: sometimes young athletes get so caught up in maximizing their performance in a single sport that they forget about the most important part of the game - to have fun! If there is no longer passion for a sport, it is very challenging to continue training or competing in that sport. This is why we encourage all of our young athletes to take mental and physical breaks away from intense training in the same sport year-round. This allows time for different activities, and athletes usually come back refreshed & excited.

  • Gain perspective & become more resilient: changing environments leads to new experiences and lessons learned. Kids are exposed to different types of coaches, teammates, and also new roles that they have to figure out. This leads to problem solving & psychological growth, which is great for handling the mental side of sports.

  • Reduced injury: studies have shown that multi-sport athletes are less likely to experience overuse injuries. Repetitively training the same movements can cause muscle imbalances. These imbalances can place you at a greater risk for injury.

We hope you will join us for a full day of movement and fun!

*Please wear athletic-type clothing, socks & shoes, and bring a water bottle & home lunch. Snack is optional.
