Lead Coaches: Rafael Shore & Phil Sakaba

We are so excited to have two amazing coaches lead our Futsal program. Coach Rafael has been around a soccer ball his entire life. He fell in love with the sport at a young age and continued on to play in college at the University of Virginia, and even participated in the USL pro league. Coach Rafael has been training calisthenics for the last 10 years, and coaching soccer for 7 years. He is currently the head coach of Albion Keiki Academy program on Oahu, and the head coach of the Boys Intermediate program at Le Jardin Academy He is extremely knowledgeable in the game of futsal, and he is excited to bring the sport to the windward side, which he believes will elevate the level of soccer in our community.

Coach Phil played collegiate soccer for four years at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Prior to college, Phil played soccer for Mililani High School, and was also a part of both the Hawaii Rush & Honolulu Bulls soccer clubs. Phil earned a master's in education from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he currently works as a Behavior Analyst for children with special needs. Coach Phil has enjoyed coaching at many keiki soccer clinics around the Island. He is excited to share his knowledge & passion for the game and hopes to make a positive impact on the keiki he works with.

Why would my child benefit from Futsal?

  • “Futsal players touch the ball far more often than soccer players—six times more often per minute, according to a Liverpool University study.”

  • “The smaller, heavier ball demands and rewards more precise handling—as coaches point out, you can’t get out of a tight spot simply by booting the ball downfield.”

  • “Sharp passing is paramount: the game is all about looking for angles and spaces and working quick combinations with other players.”

  • “Ball control and vision are crucial, so that when futsal players play the full-size game, they feel as if they have acres of free space in which to operate.”

  • “Futsal compresses soccer’s essential skills into a small box; it places players inside the deep practice zone, making and correcting errors, constantly generating solutions to vivid problems.”

  • “Players touching the ball 600 percent more often learn far faster, without realizing it, than they would in the vast, bouncy expanse of the outdoor game .”

  • “The balls used in futsal are weighted which supports the development of young children’s technical skills, as the ball stays closer to the players feet.”

Please Note: We believe in Long Term Athletic Development in all of our programs. Therefore, we are more concerned with teaching athleticism through the sport of futsal at the younger ages. This is a long-term approach to success in sport by doing the right things at the right time. Using this approach, we focus on creating a well-rounded athlete that has gained physical literacy in a broad range of movements using futsal as our guide. This will give an athlete confidence to move on to more advanced levels of training in the teen years. If children do not gain agility, balance, coordination, speed, and a love for movement at an early age, it is much more challenging for them to have confidence to continue to play a sport through the teen years.

Our clinics are the best of both worlds where kids gain athleticism and learn proper technical skills, all while falling in love with the game of Futsal!

Please find your child’s level below:

Level 1: This is our entry level, and a proper introduction to futsal. Players should enter this level if they are new to the game or played in recreational programs. We introduce you to the game in a fun and high energy environment that is focused on developing coordination, speed, footwork, and reaction time. We will focus on individual ball skills and possessing the ball confidently through fun & interactive dribbling games.

Level 2: Experience is required for Level 2, which is a more competitive environment. Players must have graduated on from level 1 or have prior understanding of the game, as well as good prior foot skills. We will work on specific skill moves, positional play, defending and attacking, movement on and off of the ball, shooting, and more.

Level 3: Competitive League (must have exceeded our level 2, or have 2+ years of experience playing organized soccer)

30 mins of skills (all players together) + 40 mins of short-sided games (3 v 3, 4 v 4, 5 v 5 etc)

*No need to sign up with a team. Please sign up as a single player, and we will form teams at the start of the league. New teams will be formed at the halfway mark to allow players the chance to play with different people.

We run this small-sided league for Volleyball, Basketball, & now Futsal! It is our goal to offer programs that promote development, while also prioritizing an athlete’s mental health and long-term success in the sport. Studies have shown that kids are rarely organizing unstructured play amongst themselves anymore (Taking a soccer ball to the park with friends etc) This free play is crucial for developing life skills, like conflict resolution, self-motivation, creativity, and social-emotional development. The days of free play have been replaced with high-stake year-round games, and adult imposed pressures. We created this league to allow players the opportunity to freely play without a ton of over coaching from parents & coaches. We find that our smaller sided leagues empower kids to make decisions for themselves. The benefit of this is many athletes are able to push past many mental and physical barriers. We see a ton of growth, and most importantly it’s FUN, which keeps the fire burning!
